Words of Jesus Part 24
I will be skipping some verses because this
particular study is not on the whole book of Matthew but on the
actual words of Jesus.
Jesus is now standing before Pilate, the
elders and chief priests.
- Matthew 27:11 And Jesus stood before the governor: and the governor asked him,
saying, Art thou the King of the Jews? And Jesus said unto him, Thou sayest.
- 12 And when he was accused of the chief priests and elders, he answered
nothing.
- 13 Then said Pilate unto him, Hearest thou not how many things they
witness against thee?
- 14 And he answered him to never a word; insomuch that the governor marvelled greatly.
We notice that Jesus did not plead for His
life here. He could have performed a miracle and convinced all
present that He was the Christ but He did not. The time had come for
our beloved Lord to give His life for our sins, ushering in the way
of salvation for all who afterward would believe. Jesus allowed
Himself to be falsely accused so that the way of salvation could
come about. Glory to His name forevermore.
We will jump ahead now after much mocking,
beating, and cruelty which Pilate allowed hoping I think to satisfy
the people so that would not push for His death. Now Jesus is on the
cross suffering for sins.
- Matthew 27:42 He saved others; himself he cannot save. If he be the King of
Israel, let him now come down from the cross, and we will believe him.
- 43 He trusted in God; let him deliver him now, if he will have him: for
he said, I am the Son of God.
- 44 The thieves also, which were crucified with him, cast the same in his
teeth.
- 45 Now from the sixth hour there was darkness over all the land unto the
ninth hour.
- 46 And about the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, saying,
Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani? that is to say, My God, my God, why hast thou
forsaken me?
- 47 Some of them that stood there, when they heard that, said, This man calleth for Elias.
I believe God had to turn away at this moment
because that was the moment when every ugly sin of all mankind
entered into the sinless body of Jesus. Jesus cried out, asking why
God had forsaken Him.
Here are the words of Peter concerning this
moment.
- 1Peter 2:21 For even hereunto were ye called: because Christ also suffered for
us, leaving us an example, that ye should follow his steps:
- 22 Who did no sin, neither was guile found in his mouth:
- 23 Who, when he was reviled, reviled not again; when he suffered, he
threatened not; but committed himself to him that judgeth righteously:
- 24 Who his own self bare our sins in his own body on the tree, that we,
being dead to sins, should live unto righteousness: by whose stripes ye were
healed.
- 25 For ye were as sheep going astray; but are now returned unto the
Shepherd and Bishop of your souls.
And in Hebrews.
- Hebrews 9:28 So Christ was once offered to bear the sins of many; and unto them
that look for him shall he appear the second time without sin unto salvation.
- Matthew 27:50 Jesus, when he had cried again with a loud voice, yielded up the
ghost.
- 51 And, behold, the veil of the temple was rent in twain from the top to
the bottom; and the earth did quake, and the rocks rent;
- 52 And the graves were opened; and many bodies of the saints which
slept arose,
- 53 And came out of the graves after his resurrection, and went into the
holy city, and appeared unto many.
- 54 Now when the centurion, and they that were with him, watching Jesus,
saw the earthquake, and those things that were done, they feared greatly,
saying, Truly this was the Son of God.
After His resurrection we here a little more
from Jesus but He stayed 40 days with His disciples teaching them
and instructing them in what they were to do next.
- Matthew 28:1 In the end of the
Sabbath, as it began to dawn toward the first day
of the week, came Mary Magdalene and the other Mary to see the sepulcher.
- 2 And, behold, there was a great earthquake: for the angel of the Lord
descended from heaven, and came and rolled back the stone from the door, and sat
upon it.
- 3 His countenance was like lightning, and his raiment white as snow:
- 4 And for fear of him the keepers did shake, and became as dead men.
- 5 And the angel answered and said unto the women, Fear not ye: for I know
that ye seek Jesus, which was crucified.
- 6 He is not here: for he is risen, as he said. Come, see the place where
the Lord lay.
- 7 And go quickly, and tell his disciples that he is risen from the dead;
and, behold, he goeth before you into Galilee; there shall ye see him: lo, I
have told you.
- 8 And they departed quickly from the sepulchre with fear and great joy;
and did run to bring his disciples word.
- 9 And as they went to tell his disciples, behold, Jesus met them, saying,
All hail. And they came and held him by the feet, and worshipped him.
- 10 Then said Jesus unto them, Be not afraid: go tell my brethren that
they go into Galilee, and there shall they see me.
- 16 Then the eleven disciples went away into Galilee, into a mountain
where Jesus had appointed them.
- 17 And when they saw him, they worshipped him: but some doubted.
- 18 And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying,
All power is given unto
me in heaven and in earth.
- 19 Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name
of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:
- 20 Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded
you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen.
The followers of Jesus were to go into
all the world and preach the gospel, baptizing them in the name of
the Father, Son and Holy Ghost. Notice that He did not say to use
force, torture, persecution of death threats.
Teach them all things that He commanded them.
We are to teach, make disciples, instruct in the word of God.
The last words in Matthew promises that He
will be with all who believe unto the end of the present world as we
know it.
Here is Luke's account in the book of Acts.
- Acts 1:1 The former treatise have I made, O Theophilus, of all that Jesus began
both to do and teach,
- 2 Until the day in which he was taken up, after that he through the Holy
Ghost had given commandments unto the apostles whom he had chosen:
- 3 To whom also he shewed himself alive after his passion by many
infallible proofs, being seen of them forty days, and speaking of the things
pertaining to the kingdom of God:
- 4 And, being assembled together with them, commanded them that they should
not depart from Jerusalem, but wait for the promise of the Father, which, saith
he, ye have heard of me.
Jesus told His disciples not to go and teach
until they received the Holy Ghost. They were to tarry in Jerusalem.
He did not send them out unprepared but equipped them, not with
seminars, bible college or military training but He gave them a new
baptism. They were baptized with the Holy Ghost which empowered them
to the service of spreading the gospel all over the world.
This promise was not just for them but for
all who later would believe.
- Acts 2:38 Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of
you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive
the gift of the Holy Ghost.
- 39 For the promise is unto you, and to your
children, and to all that are afar off, even as many as the Lord our God shall
call.
Stop and think for one moment. Almost all the
apostles later died a martyrs' death. They suffered beatings,
prison, beheadings all for the gospel of Jesus Christ. They surely
would have known if Jesus actually raised from the dead. If it was
all a lie, why would they go and risk their lives for a lie? Had
all this been a myth, the apostles would have went back home after
the death of Jesus and back to fishing. They could have rounded up
an army and tried to avenge the death of Jesus. Yet they couldn't do
that because Jesus was not dead. Instead they obeyed the words of
Jesus after His resurrection, tarried in Jerusalem, received the
Holy Spirit and then preached the gospel to the rest of the world so
that those of us today can receive the same salvation originally
given to the Jewish people. AMEN.
There have been many who will die for a lie
if they thought it was true but I doubt very many would die for a
lie if they knew it was not the truth. The resurrection of Jesus was
real. The bible has proven itself to be true. 1948 was the nation of
Israel became a nation again after being scattered all over the
world for almost 2000 years, starting the prophetic time clock until
the coming of Jesus back again.
